New York Fashion Week gets New Standards for Photoshoots

The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) has issued a list of recommendations for industry professionals ahead of the New York Fashion Week.
The recommendations are a result of numerous revelations of harassment and sexual assault that have been reported against fashion model photographers.
The 2018 New York Fashion Week will begin on Thursday, February 8 and lasts for nine days.
“We have zero tolerance for hostile work environments and strongly encourage everyone in our industry to report any abuse in connection with his or her work,” said Diane Von Furstenberg, President of the CFDA.
Von Furstenberg encouraged any persons feeling threatened or harassed to report their complaints to the New York Police Specialized Unit, The Model Alliance’s defense association or any other organization which fights against sexual assault.
The storm of the #MeToo movement which gained strength after the sexual assault accusations against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein and House of Cards actor Kevin Spacey has hit the fashion industry hard.
Conde Nast International cut ties with fashion photographer Terry Richardson after a slew of sexual assault and harassment accusations were made public in October 2017. Richardson’s spokeswoman said in this defense that “all of the subjects of his work participated consensually.”
More recently, photographers Bruce Weber and Marino Testino were both accused of sexually harassing male models. Nearly thirty male models told Time magazine that they experienced unwanted sexual advances by both Testino and Weber during photoshoots.
“I remember him [Weber] putting his fingers in my mouth, and him grabbing my privates,” model Robyn Sinclair said in Time magazine.
Conde Nast International which publishes Vogue, GQ, and Vanity Fair, has also unveiled a “code of good conduct” seeking to eliminate potentially risky situations during photo shoots. The new code says that any nudity or sexually suggestive poses must be agreed upon by the model prior to the photoshoot. In addition, drugs and alcohol are now banned from studios.
