Newly hired New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur is already hard at work with his first order of business: Assembling a coaching staff.
Many of the coaching assistants from a year ago have left for coaching opportunities elsewhere and few holdovers remain from the staff that was assembled by former head coach Ben McAdoo.
Shurmur is a descendant of the Andy Reid system of coaching and it is possible some familiar faces from his past will resurface in New York as they did during Shurmur’s stint with the Cleveland Browns.
The staff needs for Shurmur start at the top as the team presently has no coordinator for either side of the ball. A few top candidates for each position have been identified.
Coach Shurmur would not have to go far to find a defensive coordinator that he both knows and trusts. Steve Spagnuolo, a long-time friend of Shurmur and former co-worker with the Eagles is a more than capable choice. An interesting part of their history together is that Spagnuolo once hired Shurmur as his offensive coordinator when Spagnuolo was the head coach of the Los Angeles Rams.
A second option to man the position of defensive coordinator of the New York Giants could be Billy Davis. Davis is experienced with connections to both Shurmur and the organization. Davis worked as Shurmur’s linebackers coach in Cleveland and the two worked together with the Eagles.
Other names that are being considered for Giants defensive coordinator position are Ken Flajole and Jerry Gray.
On the offensive side of the ball, one top candidate for coordinator could be Tony Sparano. Sparano held the same position for the New York Jets for a year and things did not go well but there is more than enough evidence that this failure was an aberration. In perhaps his most impressive coaching accomplishment, Sparano was hired as head coach of a one-win Miami Dolphin franchise that he took to the playoffs.
Another option for the position could be Duce Staley. The two men have a long history together beginning when Shurmur was the quarterback coach for the Eagles and Staley was the team’s star running back. Later Staley would work alongside Shurmur as the team’s running backs coach.
The list of candidates for the Giants offensive coordinator position also includes Todd Haley and present running backs coach for the Tennessee Titans Sylvester Croom.
